Medical care in the Texas Hill Country
during the 20th century has experienced
unprecedented innovation. From the use of
X-rays for medical diagnosis to the use of
antibiotics and polio vaccine, medical
research helped reduce the rate of diseases
and mortality dramatically.
Early in the 1900s, life expectancy in the
United States was 50 years. By 2004, it had
increased to nearly 76 years thanks to new
drugs, surgical procedures and medical
treatments for infectuos diseases once
considered to be incurable.
Medical staffs have grown from just small
numbers of volunteers to more than 1,000,000
expert caregivers in the hill country.
Throughout the decades of the last 100 years
of service, The Texas Hill Country medical
field has drawn upon its legacy of providing
outstanding healthcare. A legacy that began
in the early 1900s when volunteers pulled
back the canvas flaps on their first tent
hospitals to admit those in need and
continued with the opening of great
Hospitals throughout the years and endures
to this day as medical researchers,
clinicians and teachers open the doors to
exciting advancements in health care.
