Utopia, Texas, an
unincorporated city was originally the
settlement of Waresville. The cemetery is
still named for Waresville. An earlier
settlement, "La Reunion" was a commune of
French socialists and the nearby city of
Castroville was also founded by French
(Alsatian) settlers.
The River Region
in the southwest
corner of the Texas
Hill Country
includes some of the
most spectacular
scenery in Texas --
and the coolest,
clearest water!
The
"River Region"
is a name
applied to the
area to the
north of Uvalde,
where the
Nueces, Frio,
and Sabinal
Rivers meander
through some of
the most
spectacular
scenery of the
Texas Hill
Country. Not
only is the area
perfect for
water sports; it
is considered
one of the best
places anywhere
for
bird-watchers
and other nature
aficionados. The
main communities
in the River
Region are
Concan, Utopia,
Rio Frio,
Vanderpool,
Reagan Wells,
Leakey and Camp
Wood.
It wasn't too
long ago that
this was one of
the most
dangerous areas
in the west, and
