HOUSES
One of the unique aspects
of Fredericksburg is its
Sunday Houses. These are the
small homes are where
farmers and ranchers spent
their weekends. When the
original settlers came to
Fredericksburg, they were
each given a town lot and
acreage near the settlement.
In those days, wagons or
buggies were the only means
of transportation. The
Sunday Houses were built for
use on the weekends when the
country folk would come to
town to trade, shop,
socialize and worship.
Most Sunday Houses were
small one to two room
structures with a sleeping
loft. The furnishings were
simple, providing the bare
necessities for a weekend
stay. Many of the homes were
built near churches.
Sunday Houses were also used
during times of illness or
emergency or during church
confirmations. Many have
been converted into small
homes.
So far as it is known,
Fredericksburg is the only
city where the Sunday Houses
played an important part in
the social and economic life
of the pioneers.

may be seen at the Pioneer
Museum Complex at 325 W.
Main or in the 400 block of
W. San Antonio.
